Christian W. had succumbed to the temptation of higher reward. This married Diplom-Ingenieur commuted weekly between his home in North Germany and the leading marketing company that he worked for in a large Southern German city. He had a flawless record of achievement over six positions in the electronics / telecommunications field, in jobs ranging from project leader to sales / marketing manager, and felt very much at ease in his new circumstances.
After one year, the foreign headquarters of his organisation decided upon a new direction for the business, and Christian was made redundant. Under the generous terms offered in the redundancy, an outplacement consultancy was included. During the course, Christian showed himself to be open for new ideas, prepared for change, and mobile. His ability in problem-solving provided a number of different options. Becoming self-employed was also a possibility.
New perspectives quickly came to light because his plan of action was both speedy and full of ideas. He skilfully tackled the opportunities to be found in the unadvertised jobs market, got good response to his own attractively-presented search campaign, and accepted the challenge of competition for those positions that were openly advertised.
He finally won recognition for his marketing and technical know-how in an aspiring and innovative medium-sized company, which was seeking his type of experience for the competent handling of relationship management with key clients. And so, after four months (and before his old contract actually expired) Christian had a new marketing position, with good development potential and at the same level of remuneration. Best of all, he didn't have to endure the weekly commute any longer.
The factors behind his success were firstly his own optimistic attitude, but also the pragmatic, target-oriented approach implemented as a consequence of the outplacement consultation. His decision to offer and stress his problem-solving ability, rather than a desire to seek challenges, was much the best advertisement for himself. The consultation had brought structure to his campaign, and helped him to help himself.
